Hospitals are not my favourite place, but after seeing my fair share of receptions, emergency rooms and post-op visits, I’ve become a bit of a connoisseur. So when I tell you that Umhlanga NetCafé is the bomb, it really is. The menu is simple, which is exactly what you want when you’re tired, stressed or in need of a proper coffee. No complicated choices, just good, honest food. The butter paneer samoosa is a must-try, absolutely delicious, and they always seem to have something tempting like coconut cupcakes calling your name. There’s also a charming little shop filled with eye-catching gifts, treats and snacks right at your fingertips. They even have a sweet selection for kids, which is a lifesaver when you’re trying to keep them entertained for hours in a waiting room. The service is consistently good, the staff are friendly and efficient, and while you’re enjoying your cappuccino, you’ll spot hospital staff popping in for their own caffeine or sugar fix. My advice, keep an eye out for the nurse or doctor helping your family or friend, and grab them a treat too. Everyone deserves a little pick-me-up here.
